September 12-15, 2012
Walt Disney World Swan Resort
Lake Buena Vista, Florida
By Tom Wujek, 2012 Program Chair, Flexco
The 2012 NIBA Convention in Orlando was one for the record books. We had the largest overall registered attendance of a NIBA convention with 584 attendees, including 144 companion attendees, 6 prospective members, and 78 children. NIBA continues to grow as a global conveyor belt trade association: 20% of the attendees to the 2012 convention were from outside the United States, representing a total of 13 countries. While a few raindrops threatened our opening luau, the party was a great opening to what proved to be a historic convention. Jim Abbott, author of The Five Aspects of Finding the Champion Within, shared his inspiring story and taught us the principles of ADAPT. The Convention Expo showcased the products and services of 66 manufacturer members, and again proved to be the most valuable part of the convention. And finally, who didn’t have fun at the closing evening, starting with pictures with Mickey, Minnie, Buzz, and Woody, and ending with the magical Illuminations fireworks show at Epcot.
Many thanks go out to the 2012 Program Committee who worked so hard to put this convention program together, and to the SAMI staff who handled every detail with Disney-level service!
Prepare to be amazed next year, as Program Chair John Shelton and the 2013 Program Committee are going to deliver an even bigger and better convention in San Antonio Hill Country… of course, everything is bigger in Texas! I look forward to seeing you there!

To continue to move towards our goals we must be willing to adapt. To change, and mold ourselves in order to meet the obstacles in our own way. Using ADAPT as an acronym you can put together a powerful set of words that stand alone in their significance, but they also string together like a chain in an amazing way.
Jim will present a 45-minute keynote session beginning at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 13th, followed by a 15-minute question and answer period. Between 11:00 am – 11:30 am he will sign autographs and pose for photographs.
ADJUSTABILITY – To achieve great things in this world you must be able to adjust to what is being asked. When you NEED something, you find a way.
DETERMINATION – Once you’ve found your way, you have to work to make it happen. Once you’ve found what you love, don’t let anything stand in your way. ACCOUNTABILITY – Accountability: the heart and soul of my ADAPT chain. Basically, accountability says that we are responsible for the abilities we’ve been given.
PERSEVERANCE – Sticking with it. Life is full of ups and downs and how we respond to adversity makes us who we are.
TRUST – Trust is my favorite and it is appropriate that it comes last. After you’ve found your way, after you have put the work in, after you have made the most of the abilities you were given, and stuck with it, it comes down to trust. Believing in the incredible amount of work you’ve done and knowing you are prepared for anything. When push comes to shove you draw your line in the sand and say, “This is who I am.”
Jim Abbott was born September 19, 1967, in Flint, Michigan without a right hand. He was an All-America hurler at Michigan; won the Sullivan Award in 1987; was the pitcher for the Gold Medal Olympic Team in 1988; and threw a 4-0 no-hitter for the New York Yankees versus Cleveland (September 4, 1993). Jim played for 10 seasons on 4 different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1999.
